Mapei Waterproofing and Crack-Isolation Membrane Switch: A One-Component, Liquid-Rubber Formula that

As the name implies, crack-isolation membranes are designed to isolate what is above the membranes (the tile and grout) from what is below them (the substrate). The membranes do this by providing a stretchy layer between the two areas.

Typically, manufacturers of crack-isolation membranes will state that the membranes comply with ANSI standard A118.12. This standard requires the membrane to isolate the tile from cracks of 1/16" (1.5 mm) for standard performance and 1/8" (3 mm) for high performance.

Crack-isolation membranes are designed to keep stress away from the bottom of the tile. While some companies tout crack-isolation mortars, no cement-based mortars are flexible enough to meet the ANSI requirements for crack isolation. Crack-isolation membranes also do not protect against out-of-plane cracks.

With a wide range of crack-isolation membranes on the market, an option for every job schedule and budget exists. These products are great added insurance in preventing today's beautiful tile floor from ending up as tomorrow's cracked floor in need of replacement. Mapelastic CI is a premixed, liquid-rubber, quick-drying crack-isolation membrane for installation under ceramic tile or stone in residential and commercial interior and exterior environments. Mapelastic CI meets ANSI A118.12 requirements and prevents nonstructural, in-plane floor cracks up to 1/8" (3 mm) from transferring through grout, ceramic tile and stone. Once it has dried after about 30 to 50 minutes, Mapelastic CI is ready to receive most MAPEI polymer-modified or epoxy mortars.

So yes, there are no guarantees the adhesion or underlying waterproofing will last. The issue is interaction between acrylic based adhesive and the acrylic based waterproofing. This adhesive, a wet "mastic" (or "clay"), will take days to dry, and in the meantime can dissolve the waterproofing membrane. I have personally experienced failure with this mastic applied to an acrylic primer/sealer, so although not the same, it is related to the warning and limitations in their product sheet. Also in dried form it does not have the strength provided by thinset, and so it can fail, due to movement, over cracks or and decoupling membranes.

Once in place, their function is to disconnect the tile surface from the substrate to help eliminate cracked tile. Uncoupling membranes may also act as a waterproofing membrane and function well in equalizing vapor pressure conditions encountered in young or newly placed concrete. 2ff7e9595c
